Smoke on the Water fu inserita nell’album Machine Head, uscito nel 1972, ma non divenne un singolo fino all’anno successivo (il gruppo non si aspettava che la canzone si rivelasse un successo). Il singolo di Smoke raggiunse il 2° posto in Canada, il 4º posto nella Billboard Hot 100 negli Stati Uniti nell’estate del 1973, portando l’album nella top 10 ed il 7° posto in Sud Africa. L’esecuzione dal vivo della canzone, arricchita da una parte centrale dominata dalla chitarra di Blackmore e dall’organo Hammond di Lord, divenne uno dei momenti più emozionanti dei concerti dei Deep Purple. Una versione live della canzone, estratta dal famoso album Made in Japan divenne una hit minore nel tardo 1973; questa è probabilmente la versione più nota al grande pubblico.
